Foals - Olympic Airways Rough Cut 4

This is our fourth rough cut for the music video. The only changes we need to make to this edit to make it the final shot, is changing the last shot to a shot of our other main character in the same position and change the shot of the house at the start to a different house. Apart from that, this rough cut is pretty much our video in its final form.

Foals - Olympic Airways Rough Cut 3

This is the third rough cut for our music video. In this edit we have included more band shots and overall it is a much better edit because there are no blank spaces anymore. We have not finished completely however as we still have another minute of shots to film which will be included on the final rough cut and the finished product which will be finished by the end of next week

Foals - Olympic Airways Rough Cut 2

This is the second rough cut of our music video Olympic Airways by Foals. In this edit of the video there are still some blank spaces however we filmed a lot more in this time so it is a more complete edit than the first rough cut

Rough Cut 1 Feedback

This is the feedback we received from our first rough cut from the rest of the class. As there are a lot of gaps in our film, this was the main theme of our feedback; to get everything filmed including performance/band shots. Some positive feedback we received includes things such as good variety of shots and well thought out narrative. After we get a lot more filming done this weekend then I think our video will start to look very good and we will hopefully get more positive feedback if we get more in the future.

Foals Band Shots Ideas

In todays lesson I decided to look at an already existing music video by the same band that we are doing one for. I focused specifically on the band shots so that we could get some inspiration for our video that would make it look like it had not moved too far away from Foals' band identity.

The conventions of the genre of music imply that there are a lot of focus on the band and their instruments, in particular the lead singer and Foals are no exception. There where close ups of the guitar being played but also of the guitarists face which is something I will now use in my music video. When the lead singer was singing he was the centre of frame and the only thing in focus, suggesting that he is the star image of the band and he is the most important. This is also something else I will use in my video as it helps the video look more professional and also keeps close to the conventions of the genre of music.

Advert Draft

This is our advert draft for the ancillary task. We think we like this design so much that our final advert will be pretty much exactly the same however with our own band image and our own image at the top and the bottom.

Casting Interview

This is our casting interview for the main part in our video. We chose the second as we thought he fit the role the best, with the other two getting minor roles.

Foals - Olympic Airways Rough Cut 1

This is our first rough cut of our music video. There are blank spaces so i have added what those shots will consist of. This is only half the song and we have not had chance to film everything yet, in particular band shots.

Editing Screenshot

This is a screenshot of me editing our first rough cut for our music video. In the image I am adding a dissolve transition between two of the shots and we have chosen to do this as it matches the song. The lyrics say "Disappear" and we are going to show various parts of a house that are messy due to a party and on these disappear lyrics we are going to fade the shots from messy to clean to show the difference. As you can see there are many blank spaces unfortunately as we have not had chance to film all of our shots, in particular we do not have band shots at this time which is why the video starts off blank.

Olympic Airways - Storyboard Animatic

This is the animatic for our music video. It is important we stick to this so that we can have a rough estimate to how many shots we will need and how long they will be. After our video has been edited we believe that it should follow this very strictly and should look very similar ad have all the correct shots that we originally planned in this animatic.

Shooting Schedule

It is important that we have a shooting schedule when filming so that we have a high level of organisation in the video. By marking out exactly what all of the shots will contain, grouped with the storyboard will help us get a very good idea of what our film will look like when we have finished the editing process.

Storyboards

These are our storyboards for the music video. They help us plan out how long each shot is going to last and will give us an idea of how many shots we will need overall.

Treatment Sheet

A treatment sheet is very important in the filming process. It is essential that we set the tone of our video from the very start and a treatment sheet helps us do that. With this document we include a lot of detail about the video that is importnt

Mood Board

This is our mood board that has a lot of our original ideas on it. The heavy use of the outdoor landscape and shots of the band and their instruments are showing that we are using the conventions of this genre of music as these types of things are commonly seen. We are putting our own spin on things however by also incorporating a narrative that we think will suit the song. When we broke down the lyrics we thought the song could represent a hangover and feeling ill which is why there are pictures that match this on the board.

Permission Request

Here you can see the email I sent to the record label that has signed the band whose music we are using for our music video. It is important that we have permission do use the song as if we didn't it could lead to problems such as copyright issues. By asking for permission first, it ensures that later on down the line we do not have to change the song if we are not allowed to use it.

Peace - Shot Count

Shot Count – Lovesick – Peace

In this music video I counted a total of 69 shots with the majority of them being either close ups of the band members or long shots of the car they are in from a distance. With this genre of music it is expected that a lot of close ups are in the video, especially of the lead singer because it sells the star image. The lead singer is the band’s main image and by including a lot of him in the video it helps the audience get what they want. Most of the shots where actually quite long and it didn’t seem like there was a fast pace to the song, even though the song is quite upbeat.

What is Genre?

Genre is the term used to describe the different types of a certain media.
In music there are many different genres and most of these have elements that are common within songs of the same genre. The same goes for music videos, songs of the rock genre will tend to feature longer of the band themselves with closeups on the band members faces and instruments. Dance songs usually have a lot of quick shots of people dancing at a night club with a lot of quick shots and flashing lights to match the feel of being in the nightclub that is being portrayed.

Film also has different genres which, like music, have elements that are common in films of the same genre. For example film noir films usually have a lot of low key lighting, use of shadows and have characters such as a detective and a femme fetal. To summarise, the word genre helps establish a piece of media from another which has different elements

Photoshop Tutorial - Text Edits

When creating a digipak it is crucial that the text is something that stands out over everything else. With that in mind, this type of edit is very clever as it allows any photo to be placed with text over the top which for a band could be very useful. The image will stand out as well the text and they will both be as important as each other. I will probably end up using this type of edit or something similar when creating my final digipak. As you can see you can see the text very clearly but the image behind is also relatively easy to see.

Photoshop Tutorial - Selective Colour

The selective colour is the most effective edit in my opinion as it makes one thing in the image stand out over everything else. For this tutorial I used something that I think would look very professional which was a football player celebrating and only making his shirt in colour. I think this looks good as it highlights the importance of a certain aspect of the photo over everything else,  in this case the only thing in colour is the shirt of the goalscorer, Robin van Persie, which makes him stand out from everyone else.
As you can see, by colouring in one part of the photo, it stands out a lot more than everything else, something that can be useful on an album cover if I wanted to make one significant part of the image highlighted over everything else.

Photoshop Tutorial - Surreal Effect

Above is the original image I started with before I added the surreal effect.  I chose to do this tutorial as I think that this particular photoshop will be useful for a digipak and will therefore be useful to me next year. The image of the woods below would look good on its own, but adding the surreal effect makes it look a lot cleaner. It also gives the effect of distortion, something that links well with music.
As you can see, the image now looks a lot different and I think that this is for the best because it looks strange and uneasy, as if it is fresh out of a horror film. As I said previously the photo is now distorted which links with music, so I think that this effect is one that I will use when I come to completing my final image later in the year.
